Former Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has emerged winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary for Kaduna North Senatorial District after a closely contested election held in Zaria on Monday.
Yero defeated two other aspirants in the race to secure the party’s ticket ahead of the general elections.
The Returning Officer of the election, Hassan Saleh, announced the results, stating that Yero scored 6,060 votes to defeat Muhammad Mu’azu Mukaddas, who polled 1,044 votes, and Yusuf Bala Ikara, who got 372 votes.
According to the Returning Officer, the process was conducted in line with party guidelines before Yero was declared the winner.
Mukhtar Ramalan Yero is a former governor of Kaduna State, having served from December 2012 to May 2015 after the death of former Governor Patrick Yakowa in a helicopter crash.
He previously served as Deputy Governor in 2010 and also held the position of Finance Commissioner between 2007 and 2010.
Yero later lost the 2015 governorship election to Nasir El-Rufai after completing his tenure as governor.
Speaking after his victory in the primary, Yero praised the peaceful conduct of the election and called on his opponents to join hands with him to strengthen the APC ahead of the general polls.
He also appreciated party members and delegates for their support, promising to represent the people effectively if elected in the general election.
