Veteran Nigerian singer African China has revealed the dangerous experiences he faced during the peak of his music career, saying his controversial songs made him a target for harassment and attacks.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Beer Parlor Talk podcast, the “Mr President” crooner said he had to learn martial arts and also seek traditional spiritual protection to survive the pressure and threats surrounding him at the time.
According to the singer, his socially conscious songs exposed corruption and societal problems, which caused constant trouble for him with the police, members of the OPC, and Area Boys.
African China explained that life became so risky that he was always on the run and had to stay alert everywhere he went.
The veteran artiste disclosed that he even had people secretly informing him whenever danger was close, especially during live performances.
He recalled that OPC members often tried to disrupt his shows, but fans in the crowd usually warned him before they arrived, helping him escape possible attacks.
Because he regularly disappeared before being caught, many people reportedly believed he was using supernatural powers.
The singer also shared that surviving in the music industry at that time required more than talent, adding that self-defense became necessary because of the harsh environment artists faced.
African China said those difficult experiences shaped his life and taught him how to remain strong despite the constant threats around him.
