At least 69 people died in road crashes across Lagos between January and March 2026, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the busy state.
The LASTMA also reported that 246 others suffered injuries of different severity during the same period, showing the continued impact of traffic accidents and violations.
The General Manager of the agency, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, shared the figures in a Sunday interview, explaining that officers responded to more than 600 crash scenes within the first three months of the year.
He added that LASTMA also dealt with over 900 traffic offences involving trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles during the period.
According to him, enforcement activities were stepped up significantly, with about 4,900 patrol and emergency response operations carried out across Lagos. In addition, the agency’s monitoring systems detected 17,942 traffic violations using technology-based surveillance.
Bakare-Oki stressed that the agency has a strict policy against breaking traffic rules, saying that any vehicle impounded for offences is taken before the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution.
Despite the high number of incidents, he said there have been improvements in traffic control and service delivery in the state.
He explained that response time to accidents has improved due to the repair and repositioning of recovery vehicles and traffic equipment across key locations in Lagos.
He also noted that LASTMA has started training and retraining programmes for staff to improve efficiency and performance on the roads.
Looking ahead, Bakare-Oki revealed plans to train over 1,000 personnel through both internal and external programmes, with specialist consultants already engaged to support the exercise.
He added that the agency will continue to invest in capacity building to strengthen its operations and improve traffic management across Lagos in the coming months.
