Media personality Daddy Freeze has reacted to the backlash surrounding his outfit to the late actor Alex Ekubo’s service of songs, saying the actor’s death was a painful and untimely loss.
The event, which held in Lagos on June 10, 2026, had a stated dress code on the invitation, but controversy arose after Daddy Freeze and his wife appeared in black instead of the specified white attire.
Speaking during a live Instagram session, Daddy Freeze explained that he initially did not notice the dress code instruction and only realised it later after criticism began online.
He described Alex Ekubo’s passing as a “tragic loss,” adding that, in his view, the actor was still very young and had many years ahead of him.
According to him, his earlier comments were based on emotion and shock over the death, not a lack of respect for the late actor.
While admitting that he did not follow the dress code, he said it was an honest mistake and not intentional.
He also clarified that in his cultural understanding, black is commonly associated with mourning, which influenced his choice of outfit.
Daddy Freeze added that he saw the service of songs as a solemn occasion rather than a celebratory event, which further shaped his decision.
He went on to apologise to anyone who felt offended by his appearance, stressing that he meant no disrespect to the family or the memory of the late actor.
Despite the controversy, he maintained that Alex Ekubo’s death remains a painful moment and insisted that the actor would have achieved even more had he lived longer.
