Iran has raised concern after reports emerged that some of its football officials were denied visas to enter the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
According to a statement shared by the Iran Embassy in South Africa, the country accused the United States of failing to meet its responsibilities by refusing entry documents to members of its delegation.
The issue comes just five days before the start of the tournament and about nine days before Iran’s opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
Tension between Iran and the United States has remained high in recent months, and there had already been fears that Iran could pull out of the competition, even though it is set to appear at the World Cup for the seventh time.
Local reports in Iran claimed that several key officials were affected by the visa refusal, including Executive Director Mehdi Kharati, federation secretary general Hedayat Mombini, and media director Mohsen Motamedkia.
Following the development, Iran strongly criticised the situation, insisting that its delegation is under FIFA’s responsibility and should be fully protected as official guests of the tournament.
The Iranian football authorities said the United States, as a host nation, is expected to ensure proper visa arrangements for all participating teams and officials.
They also maintained that FIFA should step in to guarantee that all required travel documents are issued without delay.
In a firm reaction, Iran stated that it is participating in the World Cup as FIFA guests, not political visitors of the host country.
Meanwhile, football officials in Iran told local media that the team is expected to travel through Mexico, while efforts are ongoing to resolve the visa issue before any entry into the United States.
Iran has been drawn in Group G of the tournament alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with all its group matches scheduled to be played in the United States.
