The Lagos State Government has urged residents to stay indoors and actively take part in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, May 30, between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the appeal in a statement released on Thursday night, praising residents for the strong participation recorded during the sanitation exercise reintroduced in April.
According to the commissioner, maintaining a clean environment remains important for healthy living and sustainable development across the state.
He encouraged residents to use the two-hour exercise to clean their homes, drainage systems, streets, gutters, and surrounding public areas in their communities.
Wahab commended the level of compliance recorded during the previous exercise and urged Lagosians to improve on it, stressing that the monthly sanitation programme is now a permanent initiative of the state government.
The commissioner disclosed that the First Lady of Lagos State, Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, will lead government officials to monitor the exercise in Alimosho Local Government Area, while the state Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will supervise monitoring activities in Apapa.
He also stated that compactor trucks have been deployed across the state to ensure quick evacuation of waste generated during the cleanup exercise.
According to him, all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas will participate fully in monitoring activities to ensure residents comply with sanitation guidelines.
Wahab advised residents to adopt proper hygiene habits and maintain clean surroundings at all times, warning against environmental abuse and indiscriminate waste disposal.
He also warned residents against using cart pushers for refuse disposal, describing the practice as illegal, while adding that more Private Sector Participation waste operators have been engaged to serve communities across Lagos.
The commissioner further revealed that residents who fail to clean their surroundings during the exercise may receive abatement notices and could face prosecution if they continue to violate sanitation regulations.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to keeping Lagos clean and flood-free, Wahab urged residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels and unauthorized locations.
