Nigeria is set to create a national resource centre to support people with sensory disabilities, in a move aimed at improving access to services and opportunities for persons with special needs.
The plan is gaining support from key stakeholders, including the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Bernard Doro, former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje, and other advocates working in the humanitarian sector.
Speaking on the project, the minister stressed that people living with disabilities must no longer be left behind in national development. He explained that the country should focus on building systems that are accessible from the start, rather than trying to fix barriers later.
He also highlighted the role of technology, noting that digital solutions should be prioritised to help people with disabilities live more independently and participate fully in society.
Fatima Ganduje Abiola-Ajumobi, founder of Let’s Talk Humanity and the driving force behind the proposed centre, said the initiative is designed to improve the lives of people with sensory impairments across the country.
According to her, the centre will give Nigerians access to global knowledge, modern tools, and best practices from more advanced countries in the area of special needs support.
Earlier, Abdullahi Ganduje urged both the federal and northern state governments to invest more in people with disabilities, saying such efforts would help reduce street begging and improve living conditions for affected individuals.
