The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media, describing it as false and deliberately designed to mislead the public about the activities of the Nigerian military leadership.
In a statement issued on June 9, 2026, by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military said the video wrongly portrays the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and does not reflect any official statement, event, or communication from the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
According to the DHQ, preliminary investigations indicate that the clip was manipulated and created to spread misinformation and cause confusion among members of the public.
The military stressed that the video did not originate from any authorized military platform and urged Nigerians to ignore its contents completely.
The statement further revealed that initial assessments showed signs of digital alteration, suggesting that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools may have been used to create the misleading content and push a false narrative.
The Defence Headquarters expressed concern over the growing misuse of technology and social media to produce fake materials involving top military officers, warning that such actions could damage public confidence and threaten national security.
It also cautioned bloggers, social media influencers, content creators, and online commentators against sharing unverified information related to the military simply to attract attention or increase engagement.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the country and maintaining public trust, while encouraging journalists and members of the public to verify sensitive information through official Defence Headquarters communication channels before sharing it.
The military assured Nigerians that it remains focused on safeguarding the nation’s peace, security, and territorial integrity despite attempts to spread false information online.
