A woman has been seriously injured after a hit-and-run driver knocked her down along the busy Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos State. Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly stepped in to rescue her and arrange emergency medical care.
The accident happened at EFF Bus Stop inward Marwa along the expressway on Monday, according to a statement from LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
Reports say the driver did not stop after the crash. Instead, the motorist sped away, leaving the woman lying on the road with a broken arm and leg.
LASTMA officers who were managing traffic in the area rushed to the scene immediately after the incident.
They moved the injured woman away from danger, secured the area, and called the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent help.
The officers also controlled traffic around the location to prevent further accidents and ease congestion on the road.
LASAMBUS officials later arrived and took the victim to the General Hospital, Odan, where she was admitted for treatment and further medical checks.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed worry over the rising number of hit-and-run accidents in Lagos.
He described such behaviour as irresponsible and punishable under the law, stressing that all drivers have a duty to protect human life.
“Any motorist who causes an accident and runs away is failing in both moral and legal responsibility. It is an offence against humanity and the law,” he said.
He also praised the quick response of LASTMA and LASAMBUS officials, noting that their teamwork helped save the victim’s life and restore order on the road.
LASTMA further advised drivers to obey traffic rules, stay careful while driving, and report accidents immediately to the proper authorities.
