President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday led top members of the Senate on a Sallah visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, where he reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for the administration’s ongoing economic and security reforms.
Speaking after the Eid-el-Kabir courtesy visit, Akpabio said the delegation visited the President to celebrate the Muslim festival, pray for national peace and unity, and show support for efforts aimed at rebuilding Nigeria’s economy.
The Senate President praised some of the major policies introduced by the Tinubu administration, including the removal of fuel subsidy, foreign exchange reforms, and ongoing tax restructuring.
According to him, although the decisions were difficult and have placed pressure on many Nigerians, they were necessary steps to rescue the country’s economy and restore financial stability.
Akpabio stated that the current administration inherited serious economic problems, including heavy debt obligations and multiple exchange rate systems that negatively affected the economy.
He, however, noted that there are signs of gradual improvement as government reforms continue to take effect.
“We came to celebrate with the President during Eid-el-Kabir and also commend the steps being taken to tackle the economic problems facing the country,” Akpabio said.
On the issue of insecurity, the Senate President acknowledged the progress made by security agencies in combating insurgency and criminal activities across the country.
However, he admitted that attacks on vulnerable communities and civilians remain a major concern that requires continuous government attention and stronger security strategies.
Akpabio revealed that the National Assembly is currently considering additional measures to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, including more support for the Police Trust Fund and discussions surrounding the creation of state police.
He assured Nigerians that the Senate would continue to collaborate with the executive arm of government in areas such as security, infrastructure, agriculture, and economic growth.
The visit comes as the Tinubu administration continues to implement wide-ranging economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and achieving long-term national development despite current economic hardship affecting many citizens.
