Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained why he decided to partner with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Kwankwaso said the alliance was formed based on trust, competence, and a shared desire to move Nigeria forward.

According to him, political cooperation between the North and the South East is not new in Nigeria’s history. He said leaders like Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello built strong political relationships across regions during the First Republic, while former President Shehu Shagari also maintained close ties with South East leaders during the Second Republic.

Kwankwaso noted that people from the South East have always maintained a good relationship with the North and are willing to work together for the progress of the country.

The former Kano State governor also recalled his time as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, saying he had a smooth working relationship with his Speaker despite regional differences.

He explained that before agreeing to any alliance ahead of the 2027 election, northern political leaders carefully considered individuals they believed had the honesty, leadership qualities, and commitment needed to improve Nigeria.

According to him, after several consultations, they concluded that Peter Obi stood out as someone capable of working with different parts of the country in a sincere and responsible manner.

Kwankwaso said this was the main reason many northern leaders agreed to align with Obi ahead of the next presidential election.

He added that the partnership is focused on national development and building a stronger and more united Nigeria.
