Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has disclosed that Jose Mourinho’s expected return to the Santiago Bernabéu will depend on the outcome of the club’s upcoming presidential election.
According to reports, Mourinho has already reached an agreement on a three-year deal with the Spanish giants, although the club has not yet made any official announcement regarding his appointment.
Perez explained that the former Real Madrid coach will only be confirmed as the club’s new manager if he secures victory against rival candidate Enrique Riquelme in this weekend’s election.
The Real Madrid chief has reportedly placed Mourinho at the centre of his campaign as he seeks another term in office, presenting the Portuguese tactician as a key figure in his plans to revive the club.
The elections come after a disappointing period for Los Blancos, who have gone two straight seasons without lifting a major trophy, prompting calls for significant changes within the club.
While other presidential hopefuls have proposed different strategies for the future, Perez remains the frontrunner heading into the vote.
Meanwhile, Portuguese club Benfica have already moved on by appointing Marco Silva as Mourinho’s successor, further fuelling speculation that the veteran manager is preparing for a return to Madrid.
