The 2027 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Abia State, Eric Opah, has denied viral social media claims that he promised to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu if elected governor.
A report circulating online alleged that Opah said he would free the IPOB leader once he assumes office in 2027, a statement he strongly rejected.
In the fake quote, he was said to have promised: “I will set Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free once I become Governor of Abia State in 2027.”
However, reacting to the report, the APC candidate described it as completely false, misleading, and a product of political mischief.
In a statement issued through the Director of Media and Publicity of the Eric Opah Campaign Organisation, Eric Ikwuagwu, the campaign team said the claim was fabricated to damage the candidate’s reputation.
The statement stressed that Opah never made such a comment either publicly or privately, adding that the story was spread by individuals trying to create confusion and political tension.
According to the campaign, the spread of fake quotes and misleading information is a deliberate attempt by some political actors to distract from issue-based campaigning.
It further stated that Eric Opah remains focused on responsible leadership, lawful governance, peace, and development in Abia State and across Nigeria.
The campaign team urged the public, party supporters, and residents of Abia State to ignore the false report and treat it as fake news.
